Lisa, I think you should consider increasing your rate. I find your work very professional and elaborate. But I have known people who ask for much more. So please consider it 🙂

I have been authorised by a German Higher Regional Court to certify translations and act as a legal interpreter in 2019. My previous experience as a Corporate Secretary in an international environment led me to specialise in legal and certified translations like birth certificates and notary documents. I will produce high quality, precise translations for you.

Authorities often request "sworn," "official," or "legalized" translations. Our certified translations meet all of the requirements for marriage, visa and student applications, and driving license conversions.

Kathleen Parker established Red Tape Translation in 2012. She completed a two-year training program in translation and interpreting, focusing on civil law, real estate law, and administrative law (the language of red tape!). Red Tape Translation has grown throughout the years in response to the demand for interpreting, translation, and online bureaucratic assistance. The Berlin-based company now employs a staff of 20, many of whom are state-certified, sworn translators and members of the German Federal Association of Translators and Interpreters.

FAQs about certified translations

1. What is a certified translation?

The translation works using a high-quality scan and does not need to see your source document(s). They translate all text, including headers, footers, signatures, stamps, and minuscule text. They will also format it in a fashion that is close to the original, possibly with footnotes. Finally, they include an attestation and an individual stamp confirming their qualifications, court sworn-in status, and correct and comprehensive translation.

The end product is a tangible document in which the translator prints the scanned original, adds the translation to the back, and stamps both pieces of paper so they cannot be separated.

If you are having this translation done for a foreign authority, please check ahead of time to ensure that they accept certified translations completed in Germany. If you have any unique instructions or requirements, please let us know ahead of time!

2. Can I acquire a digital scan in addition to a physical copy?

Yes, we will email you a digital scan for your approval before producing the physical copy. You can examine the scan to ensure your satisfaction before we post it at no extra fee.

I cannot find my certificate on your website.

Select this product, upload your documents, and we'll provide a quote. If you're satisfied, you can pay online immediately and we'll get started. We are really quick to answer.

3. Can I get my translation in person?

If you live in Berlin, you can pick up your translation at a time that works for both you and your translator if you notify us in advance. The pricing is the same whether you pick it up or have it shipped via registered mail.

4. How does your pricing work?

Certified translations are about more than just the word count. Certified translations must adhere to strict legally enforced criteria, and even seemingly basic papers can be extremely complicated. So we consider everything (the text, how easy it will be to format, any small print on the document, stamps, signatures, seals, abbreviations we'll need to look up, footnotes we'll need to include). A one-page certificate may cost between 65 and 75 euros, including VAT and registered postal shipping. Take a look at our list of products and services; you might find your certificate there. If you don't see it there, we'll email you a quote.

5. How long does it take to arrive?

It takes us around 3-4 days to complete and certify a short translation (1-2 pages), after which we will either send it to you via post, registered mail, or arrange for you to pick it up. If the turnaround time is longer than expected, we will notify you.

6. Can you match a quote I received elsewhere?

No. Our pricing are already highly competitive. We'd be astonished if you could obtain a considerably lower pricing through another agency.

7. Can you certify copies of documents? (Not a translation.)

No, translators may not confirm the validity of documents. We wrote a blog on where you may receive certified copies of papers in Germany. However, we can send you numerous copies of your certified translation if you require them for multiple offices. Just let us know when you request a quote.

We arranged a coaching session with Kathleen from Red Tape Translation, and it was well worth the money.
